When does a tooth need a surgical extraction?
A surgical extraction becomes necessary when a tooth cannot be removed with a simple, routine procedure. This is usually the case for teeth broken at the gumline, impacted wisdom teeth, or teeth with curved or fused roots.
What makes an extraction "surgical"?
Unlike a simple extraction — where the tooth is loosened and lifted out — a surgical extraction may involve a small incision in the gum, and sometimes removing a little bone, to reach the tooth safely. It is still a routine, comfortable procedure done under local anaesthetic.
Our goal is always to protect the surrounding bone and gum, so healing is quick and any future implant or bridge has a healthy foundation.
Common reasons it is needed
- Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth
- Teeth broken at or below the gumline
- Severely decayed teeth that cannot be gripped
- Curved, long or fused roots seen on an X-ray
